The Planet Zone has detailed descriptions of many transitting influences, and eventually I may finish the rest of them. Check back with the new site in May, 2003!
This is the place to come if you'd like to find out what it's like to have a planet or node influencing a certain part of your chart, like a house or another planet. The idea is to get the gist of the planet here, and then look up the house it is transiting or the planet it is transiting, and put the meaning together using your own intuition and power of self-reflection. Enjoy!
Featuring: North Node, Jupiter, Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto
North Node/South Node
It's a good idea to pay attention to the transiting North Node. The North Node shows what we will be doing if we are tune with our higher nature and purpose. It's a somewhat optional indication, meaning that it points the way to something important, but does not by itself create all the action or activity that is necessary unless we are really in tune with ourselves. Those who are in tune with themselves will be instinctively following their North Node, but it's still a very good idea to know what the North Node is suggesting, to be consciously in tune with it.
Look to whatever house the North Node is transiting (by solar chart(s) and natal chart), and recognize that if we are really in harmony with the cosmos we will be addressing matters in this department. Also look at the north node's sign to see what the highest growth potential is for everyone at any given time. The North Node stays in one sign for about 1 1/2 years. And, of course, the best thing to do would be to combine the transiting North Node's sign with the houses it is transiting in one's solar and natal charts (if you don't know how to do that, don't worry, just look up the house or houses after consulting your birth chart and solar chart(s) [*see additional note below on determining birth chart and solar charts], and separately look up the sign that the North Node is in).
Another thing to do is to look to the houses opposite where the North Node is transiting, because this house is where the South Node is transiting. The keynote of the areas where the South Node transits is to take care of OLD business in these departments, but not to let the South Node areas overpower the North Node areas. The North Node points to the future; the South Node points to the past. Both are important, but ultimately forward motion is what we must focus on.
Jupiter
Of all the slower moving planets, Jupiter is the one who has the most completely positive nature, although with some aspects Jupiter can have a 'beneficial' difficult influence. Traditionally Jupiter is the 'great benefic' who brings generally good news: expansion, positive events and opportunities, good luck, etc. When Jupiter is a problem it's because of "too much of a good thing," or exaggeration. So the best general cautious rule for Jupiter is to be careful of immoderation wherever he is floating around.
Some general things that Jupiter brings in transit:
Important Positive meanings: Grace, Good Fortune, Expansion, Opportunity, Harmony, Spiritual Growth, Confidence, General Positivity (swell happy stuff) Negative Possibilities to watch out for: Excess, Laziness, Exaggeration, Irresponsibility, Inflated Ego
However some houses are more difficult by nature. Just as life sometimes serves us up difficult circumstances that help us to become more real, heal, and to evolve spiritually, some of the houses are primarily about transformation through difficult circumstances. And since Jupiter is about positive spiritual expansion, sometimes when in an inherently difficult house, Jupiter's gift to us is a difficult experience that helps us to grow.
Clearly this is true of the 6th and 8th houses with Jupiter, and I would just recommend reading my description of these houses, and those listed below, in my Houses Zone for more information. This can also be true of the 12th house since the 12th is one of the three most difficult houses, but there is also a very positive dimension to Jupiter in the 12th because Jupiter is the co-ruler of Pisces, the 12th house's natural sign. So Jupiter in the 12th always has some positive connotations to it, but can also have the difficult 12th house connotations.
Jupiter in the 2nd is another one to watch out for. The main problem with both the 2nd house and Jupiter is immoderation. So it can be easy to expend all of the positive potential of Jupiter in the 2nd through excess. Jupiter in the 2nd can be very positive physically and spiritually if we are careful, but too often it is an indication of losing oneself through others or through various indulgences. Another placement that might indicate some spiritual crisis is Jupiter in the 4th. Generally Jupiter in the 4th is a easy-going placement because Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, the sign naturally associated with the fourth house. But there is an esoteric dimension to the fourth, so it is worth looking into the potential for more trying circumstances there, especially when Jupiter would be close to the I.C., or 4th house cusp.
The Final Word: Wherever Jupiter is, give thanks for the blessings.
Saturn
Saturn is usually thought of as one of the big, mean guys in the planetary world. And,well, he can be pretty hard, but the most important thing is to appreciate his challenge if that is indeed how he showing up, because this challenge is creating essential growth, and bringing us towards waking up. Sometimes Saturn brings rewards, a nice paycheck for those who have been 'working hard.' Saturn is all about 'working on things.' In most cases, Saturn generally brings challenge and the opportunity to work on a certain area of your life and vastly improve it. There are some houses where Saturn has an effect that often, but not always, feels more rewarding than difficult (3, 5, 7, 9, 10, and 11 come to mind) but it's hard to really know what Saturn will bring when he comes to visit. That usually depends on how dedicated and conscious you've been before Saturn visits. But wherever he goes, there will certainly be work to do. And know that we all have Saturn somewhere in our birth charts, and we all have Saturn visiting or transiting our charts somewhere, so like all the planets, we are all constantly connected to what Saturn represents.
Some general things that Saturn brings in transit:
'Scary' words, that are sometimes true: Restriction, Limitation, Illness, Depression, Loneliness. Positive meanings: Growth through Challenge, Strengthened Foundations, Hard Work, Rewards and Promotions (for those who have earned them), Greater Responsibility, Greater Consciousness.
My suggestion is to look forward to the fact that you will be greatly strengthened in the areas where Saturn is transiting.
When Saturn is hard:
This is the universal principle of tough love, in action, so trust it even if it doesn't make sense yet, and know that this is all part of the process of your awakening. The bottom line is that Saturn is always good for you, even when it feels bad, and that time always shows this. If Saturn is coinciding with hardship for you, I offer the following:
Trust the universe. Have faith that this would not be happening to you if it were not the best (and only) thing that could be happening to you right now. Surrender and become humbler. There's nothing like a little difficulty to wear down a big ego. Open up to God/Goddess/Whatever-You-Say-It-Is Feel your feelings. Don't shut off. Don't run to your favorite addictions or distractions to hide from yourself. That would do no good, because you'd have to deal with those feelings eventually anyway, and you'd miss the real opportunity of this moment, which is to be with what you are experiencing, and by being with it, to learn from it and let go. Fix the problem. Be practical, realistic and grounded. Bring in physical support of all kinds to help you, but don't overdo anything.
The Final Word: Wherever Saturn is, you're doing some major work there.
Chiron
Uranus
Starting with Uranus, we go into the realm of the 'outer planets,' which are the slowest moving, furthest planets. This group is often called 'transpersonal,' meaning that their influence is favorable to going beyond your ego-self into your deeper Self. As such, they sometimes seem impersonal when they act in our lives, creating significant changes that the ego-mind resists. If we are not interested in true spiritual awareness then the outer planets will never look like friends. If we are more interested in waking up than in going to sleep, then we will look forward to every significant planetary movement of the outer planets.
(Still writing this one)
Neptune
Pluto
Pluto is undeniably deep. Wherever it is transiting signifies an element of ourselves or of our lives that is utterly dying, and where something greater is being born. Death is not to be feared, but welcomed. Death is our chance to replace the old with the new, the limits with the opportunities, the hard with the soft, the false with the real, the pain with the joy. Where Pluto goes, there is great power. Learning how to handle this power is the key…
Pluto is one of the outer planets, which means that it is transpersonal, or in other words, that it doesn't care about 'you,' the false you sometimes referred to as the ego, mind, or personality. Pluto cares about Truth and about your True Being, which is the possibility for a life rooted in wisdom, love, fullness, and peace. If we have not yet accepted that the only life truly worth living is the one rooted in spiritual Reality, then Pluto will not seem friendly.
Pluto looks to strip us of all that we hold onto to avoid facing the truth about ourselves, about life, and about what is really satisfying. If we are trapped in the insane, hurried, and compulsive quality of 'modern' life, unable to let go of activity and addiction to our own minds, then Pluto symbolizes the shattering that can bring the false aspects of our lives crashing down. Whenever this occurs we can always trust that Life knows what it is doing, and is secretly benevolent, although it certainly does not always feel so.
A Pluto transit can feel liberating. It can feel humbling. It can feel like hitting rock bottom. Whenever it is painful, it is necessary to wake us up to something we didn't want to see before. Crisis and difficulty can be trusted, although this can certainly be hard to do. The key is to dive straight into the pit of the pain, instead of running away from it. If we can eliminate every distraction, and face our heart and bodies fully, it may be painful, but in our lack of resistance, the pain will gradually leave us. If we do not face it, it will only become stronger and come up later. The real problem is running away and avoiding the pain. Learning to meet our sorrow is an adjustment if we have been conditioned to deny and avoid, but it is the only way to really become free.
When you find a Pluto transit to be hard, please see the heading "When Saturn is hard," under Saturn, above.
The Final Word: Wherever Pluto is, something is dying, and something better is being born.
* Note from above about your birth chart and solar charts. You can view or print your birth chart at www.astro.com. To look at your solar charts, use 1) the degree of your Sun on the Ascendant, with equal thirty-degree houses, for one chart, and 2) zero degrees of your Sun sign on the Ascendant, with whole-sign houses all around, for the other version.
