This is just a spur of the moment email with some thoughts about the terrible fires going on in Southern California right now. Currently around 265,000 people have been evacuated, so this is a really big deal. Let's pray for the best for everyone involved. More on this below.

I really enjoyed speaking at and attending the ACVA Vedic Astrology conference in Phoenix this September. As I'm always furthering my education, I'm hoping to have my Level I certification with ACVA finished up sometime early next year.

I really feel for everyone dealing with this in Southern California right now and pray for the best. I live in a part of Arizona that's also very susceptible to wildfires, so I often think about what can happen at almost a moment's notice in terms of these fires.
The significations of this event are fairly remarkable from an astrological perspective, but the astrology behind it also serves as a powerful kind of reminder to all of us, which I'll discuss below.
I wanted to point out some of those striking facets of the astrology of this event.
Saturn conjoins the "true" South Node of the Moon, or Ketu, today (Tuesday the 23rd), around noon. So this is all happening at exactly the time that astrologers could have easily predicted (I'm sure many, if not nearly all, vedic astrologers have made predictions about especially difficult events at this time) because you expect the impact of such an astrological event to increase in intensity up to the exact conjunction happening today.
Ketu is in Vedic thought a very fiery planet. Saturn, in turn, rules air. Both are considered natural malefics. The combo of fire and air in an intense and difficult manner is pretty obvious here in terms of results. Additionally, Ketu rules fire and Saturn, according to many, rules structures and real estate. Pretty clear significations, no?
By the way, Saturn and Ketu conjoin about every eleven years, so this doesn't happen very often.
In terms of location, Vastu (vedic science of space, like Hindu Feng Shui) says that Saturn rules the West and the Moon's Nodes are sometimes said to rule the Southwest. Where are the fires? Literally in the West-Southwest corner of the country.
For those not used to thinking of Ketu very much, it's good to remember that in a traditional system like jyotish, Saturn and the Moon's nodes are the two slowest bodies. So their contacts, conjunctions especially, are the most infrequent events you can have, i.e. a really big deal in this system of astrology. It's really important to understand that. It's sort of like the Western equivalent of the Saturn-Pluto opposition, to give a very loose comparison.
Also interesting is that Saturn and Ketu are conjunct in a sidereal fire sign (Leo), and in Ketu's nakshatra Magha. This gives Ketu a lot of power (being in its own nakshatra) and brings out the quality of fire even more. Additionally, Magha's symbol is a throne. We have to think about it symbolically and recognize that many very wealthy people, the equivalent of royalty--or at least a lot of "upper class" people--in our country, are being effected by this.
Ketu is a planet that ideally brings about some type of spiritual renunciation or awareness, typically after some type of material crisis first. The problems Ketu presents on the material plane, in part, serve to remind us to look inward for our happiness and to realize that the things of this world are not ultimately lasting. Easier said than done, but that's the idea.
So even if you do not live near the fires, the troubles of those who are dealing with them can be a reminder of the limitations of material existence, as well as a reminder to be compassionate to all those who are suffering on any material level.
Hopefully it's good news for those effected by the fire that the planets being moving apart after around 12:22 pm PDT on the 23rd. It wouldn't surprise me if the fires peak sometime on Tuesday and then get better from there on.
